Marciano's
Steve Wicks opened Marciano’s in central Bath last February. Originally a hairdresser, Steve had many jobs before deciding that his own business would best suit the work/family balance he craved.
“I wanted something that I had control over; a business that I could make successful for my family.” he explains.
A former England schoolboy boxer, Steve named his business after Rocky Marciano, legendary heavyweight champion of the 1950’s. It features much boxing memorabilia, providing a talking point for customers and helping them feel comfortable and relaxed - an essential part of the business.
Marciano’s is a traditional barber’s shop – and much more. In addition to traditional cuts and hair styling, customers can choose colour and conditioning treatments, ear piercing and body hair removal, with a tanning spray booth coming soon.
“Initially customers come in for a hair cut but we are very upfront about our services and when people feel comfortable they are often open to new ideas.” says Steve.
Just getting through the first year, he says, has been a real achievement. “You make a lot of your mistakes in the first year. We offered unisex services but that didn’t work. I’ve learnt that it’s important to be flexible and adapt to change.”
BRAVE initially advised Steve on business planning, helping him realise that he needed twice the money anticipated to start and run the business. Now a BRAVE business advisor helps with everything from new legislation implications to helpful suggestions.
“Without BRAVE I don’t think I could have got the business off the ground. There is so much to know - having their back-up is invaluable.”
Steve has great ambitions - and no regrets. “I think about the business constantly, but it’s worth it because it’s your own.” he says. Customers are now friends and although it’s been a long hard year I have a business that I, and my family, can be proud of.”
